A coat of pink engobe is all but masked by the subsequent layers of white and blue engobe. But a hint of the pink is still evident and this helps to create a richness to the overall surface colour in this piece. The deliberately ambiguous written marks could suggest a list, numbers or years passing. These marks have been created by scratching into the soft clay along with underglaze pencil and a pastel.
