There is a sense of an horizon in this piece. The top half has a dark slip that has been applied under thinner layers of white engobe. There is also some grog that has been added into the clay that creates a more textured surface. The vertical lines are a collection of incised lines and marks made with a ceramic pastel and underglaze pencil. A white glossy glaze covers a section of the surface but is not completely opaque so the colours and marks are still visible through it.
