This one is made of a very gritty terracotta clay. The rich fired colour of the clay is still visible through the layers of engobe and slip that have been applied over it. The texture on one side has been created by applying thick white engobe, and while it’s still wet I drag the rounded end of a paintbrush through it to create the horizontal lines. The resulting ridges have a really nice tactile quality. A white glossy glaze has been applied over this. The red mark is a strong visual element but the haze of yellow around it is also important and gives the red extra depth and richness.
Slab built vessel with incised lines, engobes, underglaze, glaze and oxides. Fired to 1140°C
