I wanted the pattern on the top edge to have the feel of letters without making words. I like the uncertainty about whether the letters are dark and the spaces white, or is it vice versa? I also like the way that this piece juts out beyond the edge of the form. Other marks on the blue section were made by making impressed marks in the clay slab before the slab was stretched that distorted and stretched the impressed marks. Although the piece is predominantly blue the small area of green and red add an important contrasting colour. It’s the biggest piece in the exhibition and one I’m really happy with as it includes elements that have moved my work in a slightly new direction.
