There are elements of a more industrial or urban landscape in this piece but it also retains the soft colours and shapes that are more typical in my work. I have become fascinated by this pattern that suggests letters with an ambiguity about whether the black or white shapes form the letters or the spaces.
I often add a small area of red glaze to a piece; in this one I liked the energy that was created by putting that red area right on the edge of the composition. Rather than just using colour to add the darker lines to the piece these have been added using a piece of clay, so that the marks are raised which creates a more 3 dimensional quality to the surface.
Slab built vessel with incised lines, engobes, underglaze, glaze and oxides. Fired to 1140°C
