Mark Making and Slab Building Workshop September 2026
Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September 2026
Day 1 – Following demonstrations on the materials and techniques that Craig typically uses to make marks on a clay surface students will explore a range of techniques that include using engobe and slip, applying textures, drawing, impressing, monoprinting and stencilling. This will result in a series of test tiles where techniques have been combined and overlapped to create experimental and rich layered surfaces
Day 2 – A slab built vessel will be designed and made. Selected techniques that were explored on day 1 will be used on the surface of this piece. Craig will demonstrate his slab building techniques and how designs are originated in his sketchbooks and translated into ceramic pieces.
This workshop is suitable for anyone with a creative outlook. Experience of working with ceramic materials may be useful but is not essential.
A playful and explorative approach is encouraged and helps in leading to more adventurous outcomes.
The workshop will take place at Craig’s studio in Cornwall. It will start at 10am and finish around 4pm
A simple vegetarian lunch is included.
