There is a slight overlap which creates a small step between the green edge and the other section. The small grid patterned pieces are pre fired and then imbedded into the soft clay, occasionally one will fall out but I like this and the shallow void that it leaves. Most of the surface has a matt finish but the bottom edge has a transparent glossy glaze over it which gives a contrasting tactile feel. The red mark on the edge has been created using a low fired glaze that is the last mark to be applied and needs its own firing to make it permanent.
